The transition from one year to the next provides a natural opportunity for personal growth, and what better way to embark on this journey than with a new mindset?

Before we can move forward, it’s essential to reflect on the past year. Take a moment to acknowledge your achievements, learning, and challenges in 2023. What worked well for you, and what would you like to improve upon? Understanding the patterns in your life can be a crucial first step toward cultivating a new mindset.

Rather than setting strict resolutions, consider establishing intentions for the coming year. Intentions are more flexible, allowing for adaptation to life’s twists and turns. For example, instead of resolving to lose a specific amount of weight, set an intention to prioritize your health and well-being.

Cultivate a growth mindset – a belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and view failures as stepping stones toward success. By adopting a growth mindset, you can approach the new year with resilience and a positive outlook on your ability to learn and evolve.

Practice self-compassion (I will come back to this again and again). Self-compassion is a cornerstone of mental well-being. As you embark on your journey of personal growth, remember to be gentle with yourself. Acknowledge your progress, celebrate small victories, and learn from moments of difficulty without self-criticism.

Seeking support on the journey of self-discovery is very important. Whether through friends, family, or professional counselling services, having a support system can make a significant difference.

Counselling and Life Coaching sessions can be booked by email helenakoleary@gmail.com or by phoning 089 2243437

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

As we stand on the threshold of a new year, it’s a great time to reflect on our lives and consider the possibility of positive change. The language we use with ourselves can have profound effects on mood, health, happiness, motivation, worldview, and achievement of goals. Performance and success are enormously impacted by the way in which we talk to ourselves. Doesn’t it stand to reason that we need to bring this knowledge to the micro-level of our everyday lives in order to improve self-care and well being?

In a 2022 study published in Psychophysiology, a peer reviewed journal, it was found that manipulating self-talk alters hormonal response patterns and affects respiratory and cardiovascular health as well as influence motivation and outcome of tasks undertaken. Furthermore, by developing an awareness of how we address the self, we flip a switch in the cerebral cortex which is the centre of thought, and another in the amygdala which is the seat of fear. This will move us closer to or further from our sense of self and all its emotional intensity.

Positive self-talk tips: Identify automatic thoughts and unhelpful beliefs/behaviours and reality check these thoughts, to speak to yourself as you would speak to a friend and remember that everyone makes mistakes.

[1

post-389","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
