My suggestion to you is that frustration just might be the unsung hero of therapy.

I love hearing clients say, “I’m developing awareness, but I’m so frustrated because I keep doing XYZ despite that awareness”.

I love hearing it because most of the time when clients reach this point, they are on the edge of a breakthrough. Awareness is the first step, but just before change is frustration.

This frustration is a reminder that the client is moving beyond their comfort zone, seeing new perspectives, and pushing (sometimes implementing) boundaries.

Dealing with this frustration in counselling is like a workout for emotional muscles. With the support of the therapist a client can enhance their resilience and emotional well-being.

Exploring the roots of frustration can act as a mirror for clients in which they can discover triggers, patterns, and core beliefs.

In the context of therapy, frustration is not an obstacle, it is a stepping stone. Embrace it, explore it, allow it to teach you more about yourself.

Ready to flip the script? Let’s turn those “arghs” into “ahas”! The language we use with ourselves can have profound effects on mood, health, happiness, motivation, worldview, and achievement of goals. Performance and success are enormously impacted by the way in which we talk to ourselves. Doesn’t it stand to reason that we need to bring this knowledge to the micro-level of our everyday lives in order to improve self-care and well being?

In a 2022 study published in Psychophysiology, a peer reviewed journal, it was found that manipulating self-talk alters hormonal response patterns and affects respiratory and cardiovascular health as well as influence motivation and outcome of tasks undertaken. Furthermore, by developing an awareness of how we address the self, we flip a switch in the cerebral cortex which is the centre of thought, and another in the amygdala which is the seat of fear. This will move us closer to or further from our sense of self and all its emotional intensity.

Positive self-talk tips: Identify automatic thoughts and unhelpful beliefs/behaviours and reality check these thoughts, to speak to yourself as you would speak to a friend and remember that everyone makes mistakes.

[1

post-481","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
