While it brings countless benefits, it also presents some challenges, especially when it comes to maintaining a healthy balance.

It might be helpful to reflect on your own technology use. Do you find yourself reaching for your phone first thing in the morning? Do you lose track of time while browsing social media? If these habits are affecting your daily life or relationships, you might be experiencing technology addiction.

Technology addiction can have a significant impact on relationships. Excessive screen time can lead to neglecting face-to-face interactions with loved ones, reducing the quality of your relationships. You might find that important conversations are interrupted by notifications, or that spending time together is overshadowed by the lure of digital devices. Over time, this can create a sense of disconnection and frustration among family and friends.

Over-reliance on technology can also affect your communication and social skills. Communicating through screens often lacks the nuances of in-person interactions, such as body language and tone of voice, which are crucial for building strong relationships. You might notice that your ability to engage in meaningful conversations or pick up on social cues diminishes with increased screen time.

Setting Gentle Boundaries

Consider experimenting with setting some gentle boundaries around your technology use. You could try designating specific times for checking emails and social media, or creating tech-free zones in your home, like the dining room or bedroom, turn off notifications for social media apps. These small changes might encourage more face-to-face interactions and better sleep hygiene.

Exploring Digital Detox

Some people find value in taking regular breaks from digital devices. You might start small by setting aside a few hours each day or a whole day each week to disconnect from technology. This time could be used for activities that bring you joy, such as reading, exercising, or spending time outdoors. Many people find that stepping away from screens can be refreshing and rejuvenating.

Practising Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be a helpful tool in managing technology use. Being present in the moment allows you to become more aware of how and why you use digital devices. You might notice if you’re using technology out of habit, boredom, or to avoid certain emotions. Understanding these triggers could help you make more conscious choices about your screen time.

Building Healthy Habits

It might be beneficial to replace some screen time with healthier habits. Engaging in activities that stimulate your mind and body, such as hobbies, sports, or socialising with friends and family, could be very fulfilling. Establishing a routine that includes regular breaks from screens might also be helpful.

Seeking Support

If you’re finding it challenging to manage your technology use, you might consider seeking support. Talking to a counsellor or joining a support group can provide valuable insights and strategies. Remember, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone, and there are resources available to help you regain control.

Technology is a powerful tool that, when used mindfully, can enhance our lives. Striking a balance to prevent it from becoming a source of stress and disconnection is important. By reflecting on your technology use and considering some of these suggestions, you might foster a healthier relationship with your digital devices.

Email: helenakoleary@gmail.com or Whatsapp 089 2243437 to book an appointment

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

In today’s fast-paced world, accessible technology (social media, attachment to our phones, streaming platforms etc) has become a key part of our daily lives. The language we use with ourselves can have profound effects on mood, health, happiness, motivation, worldview, and achievement of goals. Performance and success are enormously impacted by the way in which we talk to ourselves. Doesn’t it stand to reason that we need to bring this knowledge to the micro-level of our everyday lives in order to improve self-care and well being?

In a 2022 study published in Psychophysiology, a peer reviewed journal, it was found that manipulating self-talk alters hormonal response patterns and affects respiratory and cardiovascular health as well as influence motivation and outcome of tasks undertaken. Furthermore, by developing an awareness of how we address the self, we flip a switch in the cerebral cortex which is the centre of thought, and another in the amygdala which is the seat of fear. This will move us closer to or further from our sense of self and all its emotional intensity.

Positive self-talk tips: Identify automatic thoughts and unhelpful beliefs/behaviours and reality check these thoughts, to speak to yourself as you would speak to a friend and remember that everyone makes mistakes.

[1

post-510","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
