A lack of sleep can leave us feeling clumsy, cranky, even dangerous (driving e.g.). The guilt that we SHOULD BE elsewhere/busy/getting chores done/meeting people/planning/going to the gym.

There is a time and a place for everything, including rest.

I had a busy start to the year and my cup was pretty empty by early March. For 10 weeks I persevered, I strived, I acheived – all great things! – but I also wasn’t sleeping, my anxiety was higher, I wasn’t eating very well.

I was trapped in a productivity mindset, and my self-care was neglected as a result. Again, there is a time and a place for everything.

But the time came when my cup emptied and I had to hold myself accountable and say “ok, Helena, you need to pause, take a breath”.

The image on this blog post is from that pause. For a few days I tuned out of work, of doom scrolling, and of the news. For a few days I focused on grounding, nature, exercising, and laughing. I filled my cup.

Taking a few days like this isn’t always possible – for any of us – this is while regular smaller pauses and engaging in activities that fill your cup are essential.

Email: helenakoleary@gmail.com or Whatsapp 089 2243437 to book a counselling session

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

What is the story with a society where resting is seen as lazy and, dare I say it, a waste of time? The language we use with ourselves can have profound effects on mood, health, happiness, motivation, worldview, and achievement of goals. Performance and success are enormously impacted by the way in which we talk to ourselves. Doesn’t it stand to reason that we need to bring this knowledge to the micro-level of our everyday lives in order to improve self-care and well being?

In a 2022 study published in Psychophysiology, a peer reviewed journal, it was found that manipulating self-talk alters hormonal response patterns and affects respiratory and cardiovascular health as well as influence motivation and outcome of tasks undertaken. Furthermore, by developing an awareness of how we address the self, we flip a switch in the cerebral cortex which is the centre of thought, and another in the amygdala which is the seat of fear. This will move us closer to or further from our sense of self and all its emotional intensity.

Positive self-talk tips: Identify automatic thoughts and unhelpful beliefs/behaviours and reality check these thoughts, to speak to yourself as you would speak to a friend and remember that everyone makes mistakes.

[1

post-644","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
