What is the story with a society where resting is seen as lazy and, dare I say it, a waste of time?
Take sleeping for example – good sleep health is essential for recovery, brain function, mood regulation. A lack of sleep can leave us feeling clumsy, cranky, even dangerous (driving e.g.). Prolongued lack of sleep is recognised as torture and can even cause death.
Sleep is vital.
Rest is essential.
You may or may not agree with me but sometimes we are our own worst enemies because it is THE GUILT that prevents us from resting. The guilt that we SHOULD BE elsewhere/busy/getting chores done/meeting people/planning/going to the gym.
There is a time and a place for everything, including rest.
I had a busy start to the year and my cup was pretty empty by early March. For 10 weeks I persevered, I strived, I acheived – all great things! – but I also wasn’t sleeping, my anxiety was higher, I wasn’t eating very well.
I was trapped in a productivity mindset, and my self-care was neglected as a result. Again, there is a time and a place for everything.
But the time came when my cup emptied and I had to hold myself accountable and say “ok, Helena, you need to pause, take a breath”.
The image on this blog post is from that pause. For a few days I tuned out of work, of doom scrolling, and of the news. For a few days I focused on grounding, nature, exercising, and laughing. I filled my cup.
Taking a few days like this isn’t always possible – for any of us – this is while regular smaller pauses and engaging in activities that fill your cup are essential.
